Summary: In the era of #distractlysexy, #ILookLikeAnEngineer, and #WomenWhoCode, there is no question women face significant barriers to acceptance and advancement in tech careers. Yet, despite countless examples of daily slights, their male allies often report choosing silence over confrontation when it comes to checking their male peers. In this interactive workshop, business school professor and diversity scholar Mateo Cruz discusses the social-psychological mechanisms operating under the surface that keep male allies from finding voice when it is needed most. Instead of adopting a blame-and-shame approach, the purpose of this workshop is to identify the challenges men face when speaking out about sexism in the workplace and to co-create solutions that support women best. Though this workshop focuses on male allies, the presenter will also share research about women’s experiences in STEM and why culture change in tech is necessary for organizations to thrive. This is a gender-inclusive conversation and all are welcome.

Bio: Mateo Cruz is a Ph.D. candidate in the Social-Organizational Psychology program at Columbia University and a professor of Organizational Behavior at Bentley University. Mateo’s primary research focuses on gender and diversity specific to stereotype threat and intervention for women in STEM careers. His work has been published in top management journals and presented to executive audiences nationwide. As a scholar-practitioner, Mateo is committed to using his research to advance social change. He has 15+ years of experience as an organization development (OD) consultant and now specializes in serving STEM organizations committed to D&I transformation.
