Erin Thomas, Head of Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging at Upwork ($UPWK).

Time to fill is a key metric for talent acquisition functions, yet research shows that speed is a breeding ground for biased decision making. This talk resolves the tension between moving fast and increasing diversity by outlining the case study of Upwork’s Project Bamboo. This mass hiring effort of 73 people in 71 days yielded a cohort comprised of 1/3 people of color and/or LGBT+, showcasing that speed can be a forcing function for mitigating hiring funnel biases.
